Below are some commonly asked questions we've had over the years. If you find it doesn't answer your particular question, feel free to get in touch with us and we'll be happy to help you with your questions and concerns.
Face to face is always easier than discussions by phone or email. I am happy to meet with you if you feel the need, keeping in mind that while I am travelling I cannot be building websites!
My preferred method of communication is Skype; I find it is a great way of talking and sharing screens to describe requirements. I don’t generally use video because it often interferes with voice quality, especially when sharing screens. Anyway, you are the customer and it is your choice. Be aware that if I need to travel more than 10 miles I will need to charge for my time and reasonable expenses.
My first instinct is to say ‘how long is a piece of string’, but I can give you qualified prices based upon specific criteria.
For example, for £199 I can build you a basic informational website. You would have to provide the content - words and images. If there is a website you particularly like then include it when asking me for a quote. That will ensure I have a good understanding of your needs. If you need assistance with the content I am happy to oblige but this will add to the cost. The price of the domain and hosting would be separate and I can help you with this.
If you want a website from which you can sell products or services, I can help you with this as well. Prices for setting up the website for a standard shop environment will begin at £800. Specialist websites such as online design and printing of business cards, etc. will be extra and will also involve monthly payments to hosted technical solutions.
To keep your costs down it is in your interest to ensure you have given significant thought about what you want your website to achieve, and especially your content both words and images.
Be aware that copyright exists on ALL images you find on the Internet. Using special websites such as Pixabay.com can be useful as their images are free of charge from them. Having said this, if an image on such a site has been created using another copyrighted image then copyright exists and it is possible that one day you will be presented with a bill for its use. The solution, go to one of several sites that sell rights to use images on behalf of the creator. It’s much safer and cheaper in the long run.
This will depend upon the complexity of your requirements and can be anything from a couple of days to a few months. I will do my best to give you as accurate a view on this before we commence working together.
I have detailed terms and conditions on my website that you are welcome to read. They outline the process of a typical project. It describes how it works and both your and my responsibilities for a successful project.
Before we can commence we will need the following:
- What type of website you require - informational, ecommerce, specialist needs)
- What your website is intended to achieve for you
- Budget, so that we understand any limits you may impose
- Any special functionality you require
- Domain name (if you know or have one)
- Company/Trading Name
- Business colours scheme
- Examples of any websites you feel display similar appearance/functionality you are looking for
Before it is required during the project we will need elements such as content, images, logo and site icon (usually a small image or a recognisable part of the logo).
According to our terms and conditions our payment terms require a 50% deposit in advance of commencement of the project with the remaining 50% payable upon completion. For longer term projects we can come to an agreed schedule of payments.
Unless you make any changes to your requirements for the website there will be no changes to the price agreed. Our quote for the website project will always include design, implementation, and where required the price of the domain name and hosting if you choose to host with us (you are not obliged to do this). Specific periods covered by hosting, domain names and any other services as part of the whole project will be clearly stated in advance. In trying to get the best price for you it is common practice to charge for 2 or more years for these services - longer terms also appeal to Google as part of your SEO. We will always agree terms before commitment. Payment for domain names and hosting will need to be paid for in advance in addition to the 50% project services.
Please refer to our terms and conditions for warranty and support.
This is entirely up to you. If you already rent a domain and/or hosting we are happy to work on these platforms for you. Otherwise we can arrange all of this for you.
There are a large number of platforms that sell licenced images. Before you purchase make sure you understand their licence usage terms because they can vary significantly. Commonly used platforms include www.istockphoto.com, www.shutterstock.com & www.fotolia.com. We are not making recommendations on sources merely suggesting possibilities. Alternatively we can source materials for you if required - as these prices vary we will always refer back to you before purchase - these charges will be additional to the project price.
We are happy to do this and will work with you to agree the final images prior to purchase. As this exercise will take additional time beyond typical project estimates there will be a small surcharge based upon an hourly rate of £30.
In our terms and conditions we have laid out the project process in detail, including who does what. If you would prefer to speak with someone, get in touch by clicking here.
The founder of WantAWebsite, David Roberts, has been working in IT for the last 32 years, and designing and building websites since 2010. His experience has encompassed everything from callcentre development through to sales and marketing so there are few aspects of your business he cannot assist you with.
WantAWebsite was started to address the small to medium enterprise (SME) business. Many smaller businesses do not have the technical resources or knowledge to build a website. Although television adverts make this out to be easy, there are many reasons why self-built websites won’t work including using appropriate security and search engine optimisation.
Types of businesses worked with include pet accessories, printing companies, business consultancies, building services, art galleries, technical services, and local community services. Check out our client examples.
In recent years we have been using WordPress because it has become a very competent content management system supported by a large development community that builds themes and plugins that will easily enable complex functionality at a moderate price and in a short time. If you would like to see examples of our work start with http://wantawebsite.co.uk and also visit our examples page.
We will only support or agree to change WordPress websites. If you want us to make changes to your WordPress website we will have to be granted access in order that we can understand its current state. Once we have assessed it we will either agree to make changes (usually with recommendations for improvements) or decline to do so. If we decline then we will justify our decision with possible recommendations for changes.
We have significant experience of copywriting and have written for many types of business from mortgages through to pet accessories, brochures through to novels. Please visit our copywriting services page for more information.
Absolutely. All copyright of content is yours, licences of images used will also be turned over to you if purchased by us. If we host your website we will enable you to have access to the website for administration purposes. We will also provide you with a backup copy of your website and set you up (if you so not already have one) a Dropbox account into which we will direct a manual website backup facility. Naturally we will provide you with access to it.
It is the goal of WantAWebsite to enable you, should you want to, to manage your own website. To that end we will provide you a short, narrated and personalised video of your website administration so that you can begin to understand your own website and manage it for yourself.
As with other web hosting providers, a refund is not possible on our hosting.
